What is WPM?

WPM stands for Words Per Minute. It is the standard measurement of typing speed and is computed by dividing the number of characters typed (divided by 5, to normalize word length) by the number of minutes elapsed.

Gross WPM = Total characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes elapsed
Net WPM = Gross WPM − (Errors ÷ minutes elapsed)

Net WPM is the most commonly reported metric since it accounts for accuracy. A high WPM with low accuracy is less useful than a balanced score.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between gross and net WPM?
Gross WPM is your raw typing speed calculated from all keystrokes. Net WPM subtracts error penalties — specifically, one word penalty per error per minute. Net WPM is the industry standard measure of true typing productivity.
What WPM is needed for a data entry job?
Most data entry positions require a minimum of 45–60 WPM. Higher-level positions or specialized roles may require 70–80 WPM. Government positions in India (SSC, CHSL) typically require 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi.
